The Intention Behind Acuyoga™

I recently ran an Acuyoga class for Calgary’s first Prana Yoga Festival. Leading up to the event I felt the urge to share with everyone where Acuyoga came from and my intention behind it. Knowing that I only had a few minutes at the beginning of the class to talk, I really had to hit the main points and move along. So I thought that I’d write a blog post about it and share this story with you.

I love yoga! I love the way it makes me feel, especially savasana. One evening, while attending my regular yoga class with a friend of mine, as we were winding down and getting ready for my favorite pose, I felt my brain kick into overdrive. As I was lying there, especially knowing there were only a few minutes for savasana, I began to get frustrated with my body not relaxing (can anyone else relate???).

I looked over at my friend (who also happens to be a patient of mine) and joked, “how nice would it be if someone came around and gave us all acupuncture?” So I started thinking, why not have a class that combined both yoga and acupuncture? And why not extend savasana to….a half an hour or more!!?? How amazing would that be?

So I did it! 4 years, and a bazillion classes later I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the best yoga instructors and studios in Calgary. I still grin ear to ear after I see Acuyoga participants come out of savasana looking completely weightless and whispering “that’s the most relaxed that I’ve ever felt in my life.”

The movement of yoga helps us get out of our heads while stretching out all of our tight muscles. Acupuncture quiets our mind while deepening our relaxation. When combined, these two modalities go hand in hand in resetting our nervous system.

As a society I believe our bodies are constantly stressed, constantly in “fight or flight” mode throughout the day, and that’s hard on our system. We need to be able to counteract our stress on a regular basis in order to stay healthy. During Acuyoga™, we create an environment that allows the body to decompress. In this space, while you’re lying on your mat with acupuncture in just the right spot, your mind and body are able to quiet. That space in between sleep and awake, this is where your body can start healing and get the rest in needs to reset.

This is where my passion lies. This is my intention behind Acuyogaand this is why I do what I do.
